I am Kazuhiro Ogawa of Tohoku University, who has been elected as the 39th president of the Japan Thermal Spray Society. I have learned a great deal from the president at the time, the directors, and all the members. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude. I hope that I can repay the debt of gratitude that I have been brought up with. I will do my best for the development of the society. I would be grateful for the cooperation of all members.
I have been a member of the Japan Thermal Spray Society (at the time of joining, it was the Japan Thermal Spray Association) for exactly 20 years. Since joining the society, I have participated in the conferences and discussion with many people, as well as in the Thermal Plasma Spray (TPS) Study Group, which was established and operated by Prof. Masahiro Fukumoto, the former president of the society, and I have keenly felt the interest of thermal spraying and received many stimuli. From now on, I feel it is my mission to provide the same kind of stimulation to young researchers and engineers. We will try to create an attractive society so that not only young researchers and engineers but also all the members can feel excited and thrilled by participating in our society. We will think seriously about how much we can offer the merits and benefits of being a member of the society, and hope to halt the recent decline in the number of members and even increase the number of members.
Now, the world is undergoing a drastic change from the past due to an unprecedented new coronavirus, and the sense of stagnation caused by the coronavirus is far beyond our expectations. I am sure that all of our members have things they want to do and things they need to do, but are unable to do them. It will be difficult to end the corona for a while longer, but if we think about it differently, we can say that we have had time to think carefully about what we should do as an academic society under these circumstances. In order to make a big jump, we need to take a step back, and now is the time for all of us to think about what we can do to make a big leap forward.
By the way, have you ever heard of Prof. Shoichi Sakata, a leading particle physicist under the tutelage of Prof. Makoto Kobayashi and Prof. Toshihide Masukawa, who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2008 for their contributions to physics based on the Kobayashi-Masukawa theory? Prof. Sakata said, "Innovation always occurs in the boundary area of disciplines". Thermal spraying technology is a fusion of many academic disciplines, such as materials engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, and chemistry, and is definitely a discipline and technology that synthesizes diverse knowledge without being biased toward any one discipline. However, when we think of thermal spray engineering and thermal spray technology as a single discipline, we believe that it is time to search for new academic boundary areas to bring about innovation. Therefore, we have set our slogan for this term as "Challenge of the next generation thermal spraying technology" and hope to challenge the development of new boundary areas with the help of our members. This means that we will consider the development of next-generation thermal spraying engineering and technology by expanding our viewpoints to fields that have not been considered so far, using the thermal spraying technology that has been used up to now as the basic technology. First of all, we have established a new working group (WG) to consider the future of thermal spray engineering and thermal spray technology. Of course, we will be working in strong cooperation with the Japan Thermal Sprayers Association. We hope that this WG will not only explore the academic field of thermal spray engineering, but will also promote the development of thermal spray technology from an industrial perspective. We are looking forward to receiving knowledge and ideas from our members.
In addition, since COVID-19, face-to-face meetings and lectures have not been possible, and there has been a movement toward online meetings. In order to strengthen this point and to increase the opportunities for information and opinion exchange with our members, we have newly established the Online Meeting WG. We believe that this will enable efficient participation in workshops and seminars beyond the borders of the chapter, and will activate the activities of the chapter and provide more information to the members. We hope that you will make active use of this WG. The use of the online system also facilitates collaboration with other countries. In particular, we hope to promote cooperation and exchange with related organizations in Asian countries such as China, Korea, Singapore, India, and Australia etc., and send out the presence of thermal spraying technology in Asia, especially the Japan Thermal Spray Society, to the world.
Finally, I would like to ask for the cooperation of all the committee members, and secretariat members in ensuring the smooth operation of the society. In addition, we sincerely ask for the cooperation and constructive opinions of our members for the further development of the society and thermal spraying technology.
